Shaping the Future of Construction

The introduction of Construction Technical Excellence Colleges is a 2025 UK government initiative to revolutionise training in the construction sector. Backed by a £100 million investment, these colleges are designed to bridge the construction skills gap by collaborating with employers to provide high-quality, modern, and traditional training, aiming to train 40,000 learners by 2029.

The East Midlands Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC) is led by Derby College Group.

Working in close collaboration with industry partners, we ensure our curriculum reflects real-world needs, equipping learners with the practical skills, knowledge and behaviours required to succeed in a fast-evolving construction sector. From entry-level training to advanced technical qualifications, we are committed to developing a skilled workforce that drives regional economic growth.

The CTECs were established for four main reasons, largely driven by the government’s need to meet specific, high-stakes infrastructure targets:
  1. Addressing Severe Skill Shortages: The UK faces an urgent need for skilled construction professionals, with industry data highlighting over 35,000 vacancies.
  2. Delivering 1.5 Million Homes: The primary goal is to provide the skilled workforce necessary to fulfill the government’s target of building 1.5 million new homes.
  3. Modernizing Industry Skills: There is a need to shift training toward net-zero, digital engineering, and low-carbon technologies.
  4. Increasing Work-Ready Talent: The initiative aims to close the gap between training and employment, ensuring that learners are prepared to work immediately upon completion.
