ROUTES INTO CONSTRUCTION

Powering the Future Skills of the East Midlands

The construction industry is growing, but it needs new talent to keep up. An additional 50,000 people are required every year to meet demand across the sector. Whether you’re leaving school, changing direction, or looking to support future talent, there are multiple ways to start a career in construction.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are one of the most direct routes into construction, combining paid employment with structured training. As an apprentice, you’ll spend the majority of your time working alongside experienced professionals on-site, while also completing off-the-job training with a college or training provider.

There are a wide range of construction apprenticeships available. Programmes typically last at least 12 months, with opportunities to progress to higher levels as your skills develop.

Best for:

  • Those ready to start work straight away
  • Practical learners
  • People with a clear career path in mind

College Courses

Further Education college courses are a popular route for students who want to continue learning after GCSEs while developing practical construction skills. Courses are delivered in a mix of classroom and workshop environments, helping students build both technical knowledge and hands-on experience.

There is a wide variety of construction-related qualifications available, and can lead directly into employment, apprenticeships or higher education, depending on the qualification and career goals.

Best for:

  • Students who want to continue learning after GCSEs
  • Those exploring different construction careers
  • Learners building skills before employment or apprenticeships

T Levels

T Levels are a technical qualification designed in partnership with employers to prepare students for skilled careers. Delivered over two years, they combine classroom-based learning with a substantial industry placement of around 45 days.

In construction, T Levels focus on developing technical knowledge alongside practical skills, ensuring students are work-ready by the time they complete the course. The industry placement provides real experience in a working environment, helping students build confidence, understand employer expectations and develop key employability skills. On completion, students receive a qualification equivalent to three A Levels, along with UCAS points, opening up progression routes into employment, apprenticeships or university.

Best for:

  • Students who prefer hands-on learning
  • Those wanting both qualifications and work experience
  • A clear route into employment, apprenticeships or university
