David Brough
David has worked in the construction industry since leaving school, beginning his career as a trainee on the YTS scheme before progressing into a bricklaying apprenticeship. He subsequently joined the British Army as a Royal Engineer, re-trading as a carpenter and joiner. Throughout his military service, construction remained his core specialism, and during periods of leave he continued to actively develop his skills and knowledge as a loft conversion specialist, further strengthening his practical expertise.
After leaving the Army, David established and ran his own successful construction business, specialising in house extensions and loft conversions, while also undertaking subcontract work for larger construction firms. He later moved into education alongside continued industry practice, ensuring his teaching was underpinned by current, real-world construction experience.
David has taught within Further Education for 19 years, initially delivering both bricklaying and carpentry and joinery before specialising exclusively in carpentry and joinery. He has since progressed into leadership and management and currently manages Construction and the Built Environment provision at Derby College. His education career includes roles at Burton and South Derbyshire College and Derby College.
